The month of May means spring, April did not live up to its reputation of showers; we had only 9mm of rain during the whole month. But the nights are cold the grass won’t grow, roll on summer.

The divot party I mentioned last month was a great success, after fretting that only a few would turn up, suddenly walking up the first fairway were 20 – 30 people, divoting mixture flying everywhere, “excuse me that’s mine to fill”, the first was done in about 5 minutes, more strategy was required, lets split up said Gary and John. As 2 groups we covered all but 2 holes on the course and then went in for a well deserved Curry. Many thanks to all those who helped, the course will be that much better in appearance and to play on during the coming months.

Socially we have had the Thai food theme night and a line dancing event. The food for the Thai night was exceptional, the spicy duck course, as my wife would say, was to die for. Simon and Shirley produce some of the finest dishes to be presented at a golf club in the Midlands, many thanks. Simon is intending to run an Italian theme night; keep your eyes open for the posters so that you don’t miss out, it is bound to fill up quickly. My friend Stuart is a keen Line dancer and after some cajoling from me agreed to try and teach some of us at the club to line dance. I don’t think he realised the magnitude of the challenge! 30 of us strutted our stuff, confusion reigned, especially as you have to turn round and face away from the instructor at times. I was lost, is it my left leg over my right leg or weight on my toes? A bit like my golf swing, but for all the mayhem a good time was had by all, the food was as usual delicious. I am hoping that we haven’t frightened him too much and he will return in the autumn for another round.

The Club Open day on Sunday 25th April, was well attended and my thanks go to all the members and staff who put in a lot of hard work to make it the success it was. A lot of our visitors were impressed by the course, clubhouse and general set up of our club and at present we have had over 10 applications to join resulting directly from the day.

On to golfing matters! My Captains challenges have not been going too well! Played about 8 matches and the results seem to be going the challengers way, I would like to put the blame on my partners, but unfortunately I suppose the only consistent person in these challenges is me, so perhaps I am letting them down, I’ll try harder. But seriously these games are great fun and we always have a very pleasant time and the 19th hole is always appreciated.

I organised a fun 9 hole cross country shotgun. Everyone was a little shocked at the start time, 6.15 am, most of the players said there is only one 6.15 and it is normally nearer dusk than dawn. To my delight, everyone turned up bright and breezy, we played golf over an unusual yet at times challenging course, everyone finished on time, but one team managed to get lost!! No names though. The atmosphere in the dining room for the full English breakfast afterwards was buzzing, where did you go? What shot did you play? How many 2’s did you have? I have no idea what the par would be for the course, but there were some exceptional scores.

In third place with a score of 30.5 were                 Steve Croft, Charlie Powers, Julia Kyte and John Weston

In second place with a score of 29.8 were             Roman Croft, Mary Lightfoot, Richard Hardy and Fiona Whittock

In first place on count back with a score of 29.8     Chris Phillips, Val Evans, Craig Nichol and Lyn Allen

Well done to the winners and thank you all for making it such an enjoyable day, I believe that the vice Captain is considering organising one for next year

That’s all for now, but just to remind you the Joint Captains Charity Day is on the 12th June, there are only a very few tickets left for the evening function, but you are still able to sign up for the daytime golf competition which is run on an AM – AM format, teams drawn, with 2 players to count, so a fairly friendly format
