Sorry for not updating for May, but I have been away on holiday! The island of Samos in Greece is very beautiful, quiet and relaxing. But I’m back now and everything is in full swing.
Where is the rain? The sunshine is lovely to play in, but we need some rain to make the grass grow! Gary the Head Greenkeeper has been seen out at night doing a rain dance, perhaps I should start singing, that always makes it rain.
The Joint Captains Charity Day on the 12th June was a wonderful success, the sun shone, the golf was good and the evening summer ball, thoroughly enjoyable. We raised a great deal, a big thanks to our many sponsors, members and guests who dug deep in their pockets to raise a magnificent amount. The men looked suave and sophisticated and the Ladies elegant and glamorous, the food as usual was fabulous. Mary Steventon had organised a Harpist to entertain us while we had canapés on the patio and during the meal, what a great treat, normally I would have been fretting about how the evening was progressing, but the seductive tones of the harp left me relaxed and prepared for the nights events. With Heads and tails and a small raffle (one Lady wanted the prize table flower arrangement as a prize, how could I refuse) the days events and sponsors raised over £2000. Dancing to our vocal duo Rachel and Paul seemed to be to everyone’s liking, the dance floor was full, people began dancing between the tables, and yet I was able to still enjoy a chat to many of the people who attended without having to shout to be heard. Many thanks to all the staff and helpers, we couldn’t run such a wonderful event like this without your help and support.

On the social front we planned to have some huge parties to support England’s Football team whilst they went on to win the World Cup. One major problem, England played rubbish, no-one was in the mood, a few hardened supporters managed to watch them play while enjoying a cheap drink, hopefully Europe will do better in the Ryder Cup and England will win Euro 2012.
The golf course has been in excellent condition especially for Corbett Bowl and Invitation Day. Both competitions were well supported and some excellent scores were had by many people. Keith Gregory and I have never done better than about 7 down to the course on Corbett Bowl, what a shock then, when standing on the 18th tee 2 up. Shall I take a wedge and play up short? Or go for the green and risk the hazards? The pressure was on! I am delighted to say we came of with a nett par so ending up 2 up on the course. The winners came in with an astounding 5 up!
The results were

Invitation day was blessed with some glorious weather and some tremendous golf, this is a chance to meet up with old friends and show off our excellent golf course, we were not let down. We had a full field as usual and rounds were only taking just over 4 hours! With a very friendly format in 4 ball better ball stableford, but off ¾ handicap the winning score of 44 points was very impressive.
The results were
Winners - L Silver & S Kupfer
Runners up - C Young & D Hall
3rd place - M Thomas & A Crawford
4th place - F Sweet & I Tilsley
5th place - L Ashworth & M Taunton

Many thanks to Richard Hardy and the competitions committee for their hard work in organising and running these two competitions.
On a rather sad note Ron Anderson passed away suddenly on Monday 21st June, our thoughts are with his family at this sad time, the funeral is due to take place on Tuesday 6th July at 12.30 at Redditch Crematorium.
To finish up, there are a few places left for the AM – AM on Sunday 8th August, teams of 4, can be mixed teams, get your applications in soon to avoid disappointment. The “Harry Whitehouse” mixed open on Sunday 5th September has some tee times available, entry forms available within the club house and on the Website.
We are going to run a trial to see if Buggies are useful at the club. These buggies are some of the newest and safest on the market. We have 2 EZ GO buggies and they will be available for hire from Thursday 8th July for a period of 4 weeks, book through the Pro shop at competitive rates, first come first serve. A questionnaire is available in the shop for anyone to record their comments and suggestions.
All for now, good golfing
