Droitwich Golf Club has nearly 40 junior members aged between 5 and 18 with handicaps ranging from low single figures up to 54. We are proud to have been awarded the England Golf’s “GolfMark” in 2007. It was successfully renewed in 2011 and was upgraded in 2016. GolfMark provides the basic foundation to the commitment we have in maintaining and improving Junior Golf in a safe environment at the club.

Since January 2015 the club has offered free membership to juniors up to age of 15 who currently have a full or five day parent or grandparent members of the club. From January 2016 this free membership was extended to juniors up to the age of 16.

From the 1st April 2020 the JUNIOR CAPTAIN is Kirsten Porte and the JUNIOR VICE CAPTAIN is Grace Bowen. Kirsten will also be County Girls Vice-Captain for the season ahead.

The Junior Section holds a series of competitions and events throughout the season including monthly Medals and Stablefords (both 18 & 9 hole), Girls Events, Fun Skill Challenges, Match Play Singles & Pairs (HAMPTON SALVER) K.O’s and a JUNIOR DAY (including the JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP held in August).

There are also two major prestigious junior open competitions held every year, THE GIRLS OPEN on Thursday 9th April and THE BOYS OPEN on Thursday 23rd July. These events are very popular and attract a large number of junior golfers from both within the county and elsewhere in the country.

Kirsten, Lili Rose & Grace have now been selected for the W & H Ladies Team to play in the Midland South Finals Week at Northampton G.C from the 20th to 23rd June.

Droitwich played their first WMJGL match at home versus Bromsgrove Juniors on Saturday 22nd May. This was the Junior Team’s first league match since September 2019. They were up against a very experienced Bromsgrove team who won the West Midlands Junior League (WMJGL) title that year. They were also having to concede a large number of shots to the opposition. The matches commenced with a heavy rain shower but fortunately the weather did eventually improve.

After 9 Holes Droitwich were down in the first game by 2 holes and in the third game down by 1 Hole. In the second match we held a comfortable 4 Hole lead at the halfway stage.

Lauren & Elliot even though playing par golf could not retrieve their position and finally lost at the 15th. At the same hole Grace and Matty comfortably won their game. Congratulations to Matty on his 12th birthday winning his debut game for the team. In the final game Kirsten & Dan clawed back the deficit to lead by 1 hole after the 17th. At the last Dan rolled in a 10ft putt for a birdie to close out the game. A very close win by 2-1 in a highly contested game versus the league champions. Tom Blizzard played for the losing team.

Junior Group Coaching has re-started on Saturday 15th May but the bad weather has affected numbers attending.

Already in 2021 there have been seven (7) new junior members admitted to the section.

Nigel Bache has now successfully completed the hanging of the 14 Junior Honour Boards in the Spike Bar opposite the coffee machine.

JUNIOR SECTION NEWS

June 2020

Early in the 2020 season the only event that took place was the re-scheduled match between the Junior Team and The Captain’s Team on Saturday 7th March. This match had been cancelled previously in October and November 2019 due to the flooded course and closure.

Although Kirsten & Lauren won heavily 6 & 5 versus The Captain (Nigel Bache) and Linda Whitehead the other two games were losses for the juniors - Lili Rose and the Junior Chairman losing 4 & 2 to an inspired Val Evans & Mary Steventon and Grace Bowen and Finley Sabbato, making his debut, lost 4 & 3 to the Vice-Captain (Mick Bott) & Jane MacBryde. The Captain’s Team therefore re-gained the Trophy they had lost in 2018 by a score line of 2 - 1. After the game there was a meal, trophy presentation and a short speech from the Captain. I was very pleased that coming to the end of Nigel’s term as Captain we were able to eventually play this annual match.

Following the lockdown announced in March, Junior Pre-Season Day (due to be held Saturday 21st) and all junior events and matches were cancelled. Following on from this both the West Midlands Junior Golf League and BCCS National Knock Out Tournament were cancelled for the season. The subscriptions were retained and will pay for the 2021 entry fees. The Droitwich Boys Open due to be played on Thursday 23rd July was also been cancelled.

With the resumption of social golf in Mid-May 2020 and now some closed club competitions it was decided to gradually resume some of the planned junior competitions.
A much delayed Junior Match Play Singles K.O Final (2019) was eventually played on Sunday 28th June between Kirsten Porte (5) and Dan Chessman (23).
They were faced with an extremely strong swirling wind throughout the match which made club selection and ball control very demanding. It was a topsy-turvy game. Kirsten led early 2 up after 4 with a birdie at 2 and a fine par at 4. However by the 10th Dan had turned the tables enjoying a good spell to lead by 2 holes. The wind was particularly strong from the 11 – 14th holes and here the match turned in Kirsten’s favour with some steady golf plus a birdie 4 at 14. She eventually sealed her victory with good pars at 16 and 17, finally winning by a margin of 3 & 1.
I must commend both Kirsten and Dan for some spirited golf in very demanding conditions. It was a pleasure to watch them battle it out on a most difficult day.

The draw for the 2020 Junior Match Play Singles K.O has been made and circulated to the 13 entrants. Games should get underway in July and hopefully the final can be played in September.

The Harry Bennett Memorial Trophy (friends of the family have donated one) will probably be played for at the August junior Stableford competition.

Grace Bowen was back in action with competitive play winning The Worcestershire G.C’s Ladies Hollins Trophy on the 23rd June with 37 pts (Gross 75) and reducing her handicap to 3.9.

Up to Sunday 19th July 1st Round Junior Match Play Singles K.O
