Junior Section

Welcome from John Walsh, Junior Chairman and Luke Rolinson, 2018 Junior Captain (April 2018 to March 2019).

Droitwich Golf Club has 40 junior members aged between 5 and 18 with handicaps ranging from low single figures up to 54. We are proud to have been awarded the England Golf’s “GolfMark” in 2007. It was successfully renewed in 2011 and was upgraded in 2016. GolfMark provides the basic foundation to the commitment we have in maintaining and improving Junior Golf in a safe environment at the club.
Since January 2015 the club has offered free membership to juniors up to age of 15 who currently have a full or five day parent or grandparent members of the club. From January 2016 this free membership was extended to juniors up to the age of 16.
From the 1st April 2018 the JUNIOR CAPTAIN is Luke Rolinson and the JUNIOR VICE CAPTAIN is Lauren Sharp.
The Junior Section holds a series of competitions and events throughout the season including monthly Medals and Stablefords (both 18 & 9 hole), Girls Events, Fun Skill Challenges, Match Play Singles and a JUNIOR DAY (including the JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP held in August).
There are also two major prestigious open competitions, THE GIRLS OPEN to be held on Thursday 31st May and THE BOYS OPEN on Thursday 26th July. These events are very popular and attract a large number of junior golfers from both within the county and elsewhere.
We also have a Junior Team that plays home and away matches in the West Midlands Junior Golf League and in the Royal British Legion Junior Golf Championship from April to September.
The Junior Section provides regular group coaching with our PGA Professional Staff at discounted rates for junior members and those juniors wishing to take up the game. Droitwich Golf Club is an official HSBC Golf Foundation “Golf Roots Centre” and uses the Junior Golf Passport in its junior coaching programme. Coaching with our professional staff can either be on a group basis or one to one.
We welcome new junior members and those juniors who wish to attend coaching sessions. JUNIOR SECTION NEWS

May 2018

An 18 Hole Medal was held on Saturday 5th May in reasonable weather conditions. There were six (6) juniors taking part with Aaron Arnold 1st (nett 71) & Thomas Griffiths 2nd (nett 75) scooping the prizes. The CSS for the day was increased to 72 indicating the difficulty of the course. Aaron’s handicap was reduced from 32 to 31 (full results on howdidido/junior notice board).

The junior team played the 1st Round of the Royal British Legion Junior Golf Championship (RBLJGC) at Droitwich on Saturday 12th May versus Tadmarton Heath from Banbury Oxfordshire. The result was a convincing victory by 17 holes. Luke Rolinson & Lili-Rose Hunt won by 6 holes and Lauren Sharp & Grace Bowen by 11 holes. This is apparently a record victory in the RBLJGC. We have been drawn against Walsall (Away) in the 2nd round (last 64). This match will be played on Saturday 23rd June.

The following day the junior team were due to play South Staffs (A) in the West Midlands Junior Golf League (WMJGL) but at the last minute they cancelled due to not being able to raise a team. They have now resigned from the league. Subsequently the League has recruited Great Barr to take the place of South Staffs. Matches versus great Barr (away & home) have been arranged for Saturday 30th June and Sunday 9th September respectively.

The junior team played its first league (WMJGL) match at home versus Walsall on Saturday 19th May. In great weather conditions (warm sunshine with a cooling breeze) this turned out to be a very exiting encounter. All three (3) matches were all square after the front nine but the Droitwich pairings managed to pull away and win. Luke Rolinson & Elliot Jones won 4 & 3, Grace Bowen & Tom Blizzard won 1 up, Lili-Rose Hunt & Aaron Arnold won 2 & 1 to achieve a 3 -0 victory. A great result to start the league season.

On Monday evening 21st May a presentation was held in the club house to Lili-Rose Hunt & Family. The funds raided by club members for Lili-Rose’s to compete in the World Kids USA Final at Pinehurst in August were presented. A considerable number of the main donators were present. The Club Captain made a speech thanking all the donators and wishing Lili-Rose well at Pinehurst.

A Girls Event was held on Saturday 26th May with a skills challenge involving chipping, pitching and putting followed by a two (2) hole Texas scramble. The four girls attending Lili-Rose Hunt, Sophia Lightfoot, Sophie and Poppy Hands all thoroughly enjoyed the event and were presented with prizes at the end.

A junior team played a Senior’s team on Wednesday 30th May in warm cloudy conditions with intermittent rain. The juniors managed to win this annual match by 3-1 with victories from Tom Blizzard & Tobey Jones 2 & 1, Josh Griffiths & James Bayliss 8 & 6 and Dave Blizzard & William Bayliss 4 & 3. Josh, James & Will were making their debuts for the Junior Team. The Junior team now remains unbeaten after five (5) matches in April and May.
Finally just to comment on some of the individual successes of junior members during the month.

Pride of place must go to Lili-Rose Hunt who competed in the US Kids Golf European Championship at Musselburgh Golf Club, East Lothian, Scotland (Par 72) from 29 – 31st May. In an international field (qualifiers from 12 countries) Lili-Rose had gross scores of 80-78-74 to finish in 7th place. She was the top English girl in the tournament. This was a fantastic achievement by Lili-Rose.

Grace Bowen & Lauren Sharp were 1st & 3rd respectively in the Gaudet Luce Junior Open (31st May). Thomas Griffiths was 2nd in the 9 hole event with 23 pts and had his handicap reduced to 29.
Thomas Griffiths and Thomas Blizzard are members of the Worcestershire Boys U14’s Development Squad and played in an 18 holes four ball match play event organised by the county on Friday 31st May.

JUNIOR SECTION NEWS - April 2018

The season has finally got underway even though the weather has not been particularly good this month.

During the Easter School Holidays two Fun Skills Challenge Events were held by Phil Cundy on Wednesday 4th and 11th April at Copcut Driving Centre (transferred due to the wet weather). A total of 18 young juniors from the ages of 7 to 12 attended the two sessions and thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

The Junior Team’s first club match was held versus the Ladies Team on Sunday 8th April. The Junior Team of Luke Rolinson, Elliot Jones, Lili-Rose Hunt, Tobey Jones, Tom Griffiths (and the Junior Chairman) won by 3 – 0. This was a very good start to the season.

An 18 Hole Stableford was held on Sunday 15th April in quite good weather conditions. It was a non-qualifier due to 3 temporary greens and an advanced tee position at the 12th hole. There were six (6) competitors with Hayden Sarfo 1st (37 pts) & Aaron Arnold 2nd (34 pts).

The junior team (consisting of 4) played the preliminary round of the British Legion Junior Golf Championship (RBLJGC) at Droitwich on Saturday 21st April versus Walmley, Sutton Coldfield. JUNIOR SECTION HIGHLIGHTS – 2017

2017 has been another good year to be a Junior at Droitwich Golf Club.

During this year twelve (12) new junior members have been recruited. We now have a total junior membership of forty-five (45).

Thirteen (13) junior members have reduced their handicaps during the season, some by quite large margins.

Three boys and four girls have played for the county team.

Coaching on Saturdays (two sessions) have been held throughout the season (At Copcut Driving Range in the winter) with an average Saturday attendance of between 8 to 9 juniors. In total 30 junior members and some non-members have attended more than once during the year.

The junior team was unbeaten at home in the West Midlands Junior Golf League.

In all, 14 juniors played for the junior team in 10 matches, having handicaps ranging from 5 to 46 and ages 10 to 18. The average age of the current junior team is thirteen (13) which bodes well for the future.

There were some fine individual achievements during the season of which only a few can be mentioned:
Joe Bellamy (aged 18) ended six (6) years as a junior member in the role of junior captain. He won the Junior Championship (nett) and led the junior team throughout the season winning the majority of his matches.
Luke Rolinson (aged 16, handicap 5) recovered from a broken wrist and played for the Worcestershire County U16’s team and was their most successful player. Luke also won the Bromsgrove Junior Championship. He will become junior captain from 1st April 2018.
Ryan Waterhouse (aged 17) who has probably been the most consistent junior over the last 2 years won the Droitwich Spa Salver (Droitwich Boys Open) and the 18 Hole Order of Merit Trophy.
Lili-Rose Hunt (aged 12) who only joined us in early 2017 enjoyed a truly wonderful season and had a very long list of 1st & 2nd places to her name including England Golf’s Abraham Trophy, County Girls Championship, Peter Skidmore (Bob Osborn) Trophy and The Kids Open UK Final Golf Championship. In this latter tournament she has qualified for the 2018 World Final to be played at Pinehurst, North Carolina, USA. During the season she has reduced her handicap from 19 to 12.
Grace Bowen (aged 12) another fairly new member won the Girls Junior Championship (Gross) and the Match Play Singles Championship. This is the first time that a girl has won this trophy in the history of the event. She also had the best individual playing record for the junior team.
Elliot Jones (aged 11) another new member this year won the Boys Junior Championship (Gross) and a Junior Monthly Medal. He supported and played in most of the junior competitions during the season.
Finally, some really good news that should bring benefits to the junior section and the golf club as a whole.

Next season there will be a new practice ground short hole and a new short blue course of about 3,400 yards specifically designed for relatively new juniors and new starters to the game. This course has now been measured and should be ready for play and competitions by April 2018.

Royal British Legion Junior Golf Championship

On Saturday 6th May the junior team travelled to Walmley G.C, Sutton Coldfield to play their 1st Round match in the Royal British Legion Junior Golf Championship. Walmley is a fine parkland course with a par of 72 and 6,603 yards in length. The day was cloudy and cold.
The match was extremely close up to the 14th hole with one of our pairings 4 up and the other 4 down. However over the remaining 5 holes the Droitwich juniors took control and cruised to victory by an overall score of 6 holes.
DROITWICH WALMLEY
Joe Bellamy (21) & Oliver Stanford (18) 8 Up versus Matthew Ryan (10) & Sean Devlin (26)
Ryan Waterhouse (19) & Charlie Chalmers (23) 2 down versus Joe Moore (16) & Alex Rafferty (28)
This was a really good performance by our junior team on a long course and away from home. We now await the draw for the 2nd Round that takes place during w/c 22nd May.

West Midlands Junior Golf League

On Sunday 7th May the junior team played their first League match of the season versus Bewdley Pines at home in warm sunshine. It was extremely close throughout the afternoon. After 9 holes Droitwich led in 2 games and were level in 2. However Bewdley fought back and the result was finally decided by the last game on the course which they managed to win by 1 hole.
The resulting 2 – 2 draw was a highly creditable result versus a very strong and experienced Bewdley Pines team.
DROITWICH BEWDLEY PINES

JUNIOR SECTION NEWS

January 2017

John Walsh, Junior Section Chairman writes:

Group coaching resumed on Saturday 7th January at Copcut Driving Range. Attendance has been absolutely brilliant in spite of the cold weather. In the first three (3) Saturday’s of the month numbers attending are up 300% compared to the same period of 2016. There has been an average of nearly 13 juniors per week so far this year completely surpassing an average of 4 in 2016.

Clearly the decision to have winter group coaching at Copcut has been an unqualified success. What is particularly striking are the numbers at the afternoon session which is for juniors aged 6 to 12. This is the age group that the Golf Club really needs to expand and retain.

Phil says “In 30 years of teaching juniors I have never seen so much enthusiasm from junior boys/girls and parents/grandparents. The juniors are deriving immense enjoyment from the coaching which also involves team games and fun activities.

The growing numbers may mean splitting the group further in the near future.

It is very good that parents and grandparents are staying to see what is being taught and actually becoming involved. It is great to see the juniors obtaining so much enjoyment and asking whether they can come the following Saturday.”

Some of the juniors who are attending group sessions now intend to have individual lessons.

Three Texas Scrambles and Girls Events have been added to the 2017 Junior Fixture List specifically intended for this age group (6 to 12).

Considerable publicity is being given to the DROITWICH GIRLS OPEN being held on Thursday 16th April. It is being advertised by a national golf magazine “Women in Golf.” The aim is to attract up to 60 girls for the event.

JUNIOR SECTION End of year review – 2016

We have had a great year.....

We were able to enter our own team in the West Midlands Junior Golf League – first time since 2012.

In all, 15 juniors played for the junior team in 13 matches, having handicaps from 6 to 54 and ages 9 to 18.

The junior team (of four players) reached the last 32 of the Royal British Legion Junior Challenge (National Match Play Tournament).
We entered teams (3 players in the team) in the WORCESTERSHIRE BOYS CHAMPIONSHIP (held at Droitwich) and the BOB OSBORN TROPHY (West Midlands Junior Golf League end of season team trophy) where the Droitwich team of Luke Rolinson, Oliver Dix and Ryan Waterhouse finished a very creditable 3rd beating clubs such as Gaudet Luce, Kings Norton, Enville, Bewdley Pines and South Staffordshire.
Twelve (12) juniors have reduced their handicaps during the season, some by quite large margins.

Five (5) juniors played in men’s and ladies club competitions.

We held two (2) GIRLS EVENTS in July and September and now have a total of nine (9) girl junior members.

Coaching on Saturdays (two sessions) have been held throughout the season (Copcut in the winter) with an average attendance of between 7 to 8 juniors.

We have gained eleven (11) new junior members this year.
Phoebe Stanley (aged 18, handicap 7.8) has been a brilliant Junior Captain, leading from the front and ensuring that all the juniors have bonded together. Phoebe had the best gross score overall in the Junior Championship. Phoebe also reached the final of the Ladies Championship but unfortunately had to withdraw due to injury.

Brandon Sarfo (aged 14) has been selected for the England Regional (Midlands) Squad.

Luke Rolinson (aged 15, handicap 5.5) has played for the Worcestershire County U16’s team throughout 2016. Apart from winning the Boys Junior Championship, he scored Gross 66 in a non-qualifying competition at Bromsgrove G.C which equalled the course record. Luke has been asked to play for the Droitwich A Shield team.

And finally Oliver Dix has played for the men’s Droitwich A Team in the Worcestershire League and Droitwich Shield and reduced his handicap from 11 to 8.
